Job/Person Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Learning Support Assistant to join our Marchwood Family

Role Purpose:

  • To work in partnership with the teachers to foster effective participation of pupils in the social and academic processes of the school.
  • To deliver and record outcomes for a range of formal and informal interventions to key children/s as directed by the SENCo and Class Teacher.


Support For Pupils:  

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, safeguarding, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Support and assist groups or individual children engage in learning, remain on task and develop effective learning behaviours to enable children to make good progress.
  • Support children in their development of social skills in line with the school policy and national curriculum requirements.
  • Assist the inclusion of all children to ensure the optimum benefit from teaching input which incorporates dealing with behaviour issues and supporting special learning needs.
  • Assist pupils to meet their medical, social, physical, emotional, hygiene and welfare requirements.
  • At times work with children on a 1:1 basis with complex needs.


Support For The Teachers:

  • To take direction from the class teacher and SENCo by working with children against agreed plans.
  • Help to develop and implement lesson plans and teaching materials.
  • Provide feedback to teachers on pupil performance, barriers to learning and effectiveness of classroom routines and organisation.
  • Monitor and record progress of pupils to track individual achievement.


Support For the Curriculum:

  • Support and work with the teacher in testing and assessment activities.
  • Review progress of pupils against specific learning programmes.
  • Provide effective intervention and support aspects of the national curriculum such as literacy and numeracy.


Support For The School:

  • Implement school curriculum policies including the school behaviour code.
  • Spot early signs related to child protection, bullying and/or disruptive behaviour and ensure that this is reported appropriately.
  • Work with outside agencies, where necessary, according to the needs of the specific pupils.
  • Provide clerical/administration support e.g. photocopying, filing, collecting money etc;
  • Playtime supervision as directed by the SENCo or Head Teacher.


Professional Development:

  • Be aware of the whole school vision and aims.
  • Participate in meetings, training and other learning activities and performance development, as required.
  • Identify areas of interest and future development.
  • Participate in the individual performance process to improve personal performance.
  • To fulfil any other reasonable task requested by the Head Teacher.


Person Specification:

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate some or all of the following qualities:

  • Relevant experience in a teaching/learning/working environment desirable.
  • Good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Empathy with pupils and sympathetic to their needs.
  • Good communication skills and able to clarify and explain instructions clearly.
  • Professionally discreet and able to respect confidentiality on particular issues.
  • Well developed interpersonal skills and sense of humour, enabling effective relationships with a variety of different people.
  • Team worker.
  • Able to work independently and with initiative.
  • Experience of working with children with Special educational Needs.
